Rocco Landesman Confirmed as NEA Chair - Jim Leach Also Confirmed as NEH Chair

This afternoon, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm President Obama's appointments to chair the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Rocco Landesman, a Broadway producer noted for award-winning productions like Angels in America, Big River and The Producers, was confirmed as the new chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. For twenty years, Landesman has been the president of Jujamcyn Theaters, New York's third largest theater owner.

Today, Governor Patrick signed into law the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA) Senate 2078.  Thanks to language accepted by both the House and Senate, UPMIFA takes effect immediately.

MAASH thanks Governor Patrick for his swift action on providing relief to non-profit cultural organizations.  MAASH advocates generated 1149 e-mails to the Governor and Lt. Governor urging swift action on UPMIFA to save jobs.

Obama Names Former Iowa Congressman Jim Leach To Head the National Endowment for Humanities

Dear Friends,

This week, President Obama nominated former Republican Congressman Jim Leach of Iowa to become the new Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Congressman Leach served 30 years in Congress and was the founder of the Congressional Humanities Caucus which advocates for the humanities in the House of Representatives. He left Congress in 2007.

MAASH thanks President Obama for recognizing the vision, intelligence and passion of Congressman Leach, who has had a distinguished career in Congress as a thoughtful and independent thinker.

Creative Challenge Index Moves Forward - Rep. Bosley and Sen. Rosenberg Testify in Support

The Massachusetts Joint Committee on Education heard public testimony on the Creative Challenge Index (House 3547) today at the State House.

Rep. Dan Bosley (D-N. Adams) and Senator Stan Rosenberg (D-Amherst) testified in support as the two lead sponsors of the bill. They were followed by Dan Hunter, Executive Director of MAASH.

Obama Names Broadway Producer Rocco Landesman New Chairman of the NEA

President Obama has nominated Rocco Landesman, an entrepreneur and commercial theater producer, to be the next head of the National Endowment for the Arts. Landesman is the President of Jujamcyn Theaters, owner of five Broadway houses, and was responsible for such Broadway mega hits as "Angels in America," "The Producers," "Jelly's Last Jam" and "Big River."
