Cultural Facilities Funding Bill Sent to the Governor! 10 Days to Win $250 million in Cultural Facilities Funding

Both the House and the Senate overwhelmingly passed the FY 06 economic stimulus bill creating and funding the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund. The House vote was unanimous, 150-0, while the Senate voted in favor 35-1. The Governor must sign the bill into law or veto it in the next days, so all our advocacy must be done right away!

Cultural Facilites Funding Approved by Conference Committee

Last night, the House-Senate Conference Committee approved the FY 06 Economic Stimulus bill which creates the landmark Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund as passed by the House and Senate last fall. We expect quick passage by both the House and the Senate in the next few days. Once the bill passes the Senate, the Governor will have 10 days to sign or veto the bill. The Governor will also be able to line item veto any portion of the bill.

The House and Senate Joint Conference is meeting this week to decide final appropriations for FY 07 which begins July 1.

We have three line item appropriations that are subject to negotiation between the House and the Senate. Here are the line items and our requested funding levels which would bring the MCC total state funding to $12.05 million:

* John and Abigail Adams Arts Program (0640-0351) $2 million,

* $700,000 earmark for the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) that is contained in line item 7007-0900,

Cultural Facilities Fund Becomes Law! Senate Votes 33-3 to Override Governor's Veto

The Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund is now law.

The Senate voted 33-3 to join the House in overriding Governor Romney's veto of $13 million for the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund. The Campaign for Cultural Facilities thanks Senate President Robert Travaglini, Chairwoman Therese Murray, Chairman Jack Hart and Senator Stan Rosenberg for delivering a resounding message of support for cultural tourism and for the arts, sciences and humanities in Massachusetts.

MAASH Wins $1.75 million Proposed Increase for the MCC

The Massachusetts Senate Ways and Means Committee today released its proposed budget for fiscal year 2007, which begins July 1. MAASH is very pleased to announce that the budget proposes to increase funding for the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) by $1.75 million.

MAASH and the MCC have been working diligently to assist our allies in the House to restore funding for the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund. Rep. Eric Turkington will file an amendment today seeking a $13 million appropriation. As of 8:30 this morning, MAASH and the MCC have recruited 19 co-sponsors for the amendment. Proposed House Budget Increases MCC to $10.2 million

Yesterday, (April 10) the House Ways and Means Committee released its proposed FY 07 budget increasing state cultural funding through the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) to $10,243,526. This would be a $3 million increase over Governor Romney's proposed FY 07 budget. The proposed House budget directs substantial funding to municipal aid to assist hard-pressed cities and towns and also dramatically increases funding for the School Building Assistance Authority to help build new schools throughout the state.
