April 14, 2005

The House Ways and Means Committee has proposed a significant increase of $1.3 million for the Massachusetts Cultural Council in its proposed budget for FY 06, released at 12 noon today. The House budget restores the John and Abigail Adams Cultural Economic Development Fund that the Governor's budget eliminated and increased its funding by 50 percent, and represents a $2.3 million dollar increase over the Governor's proposed budget.

Under this budget, the total state cultural funding for FY 06 will be $9.6 million.

A Case for Culture

A Boston Globe Op-Ed February 26, 2005

Should the state of Massachusetts invest in an industry that already has a statewide payroll of $248 million with excellent growth potential?

During the 2002 gubernatorial campaign, all nine candidates answered no. Yet, this industry not only creates jobs in nearly all 351 cities and towns, it is an anchor for tourism drawing millions of visitors to the state each year. It is an industry that provides educational services both in-school and after school and it enhances the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

Dear Advocates,

The economy of art

A Boston Globe Editorial May 12, 2004

FROM TANGLEWOOD to the Boston Children's Theatre, culture in Massachusetts is a collection of pearls. Missing is an infrastructure of sturdy buildings, adequate funding, and supportive laws and policies.

A new Boston Foundation report outlines the need. In 2002, spending by the state's nonprofit cultural organizations added more than $1 billion to the economy. But this economic engine gets little respect.

May 12, 2004

Dear Friends,

The Senate Ways and Means Committee budget also increases the operating budget of the MCC by $52,000. The Senate budget must now be approved by the full Senate.

We want to thank Senate President Robert Travaglini and Senate Ways and Means Committee Chairwoman Therese Murray for their continued support and leadership.

Cultural organizations pump more than $1 billion into the Massachusetts economy, and millions of tourists travel to the Bay State each year to visit cultural attractions, from the Museum of Fine Arts to Tanglewood.

But the Massachusetts cultural sector is losing its luster as a tourist destination, and it is in danger of losing ground as a cultural hub as well, according to a Boston Foundation study that is due out today.
